The Heritage Trail Association and the Middlebrook Consortium invite researchers and history buffs to compete for a $5,000 prize for original research on New Jersey’s Revolutionary War history.

The focus is the Middlebrook Encampments—where the Continental Army camped in Somerset County during the winters of 1777 and 1778–79, including sites in Washington Valley, Pluckemin, and along the Raritan River.

Funded by the Heritage Trail, the Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House, and anonymous donors, the prize will be awarded at the fourth “Legacy of Middlebrook” symposium on Saturday, March 21, 2026, part of a series leading up to America’s 250th anniversary.

Submissions will be judged by professional historians. The winner will present their findings at the symposium and have their research distributed at the event.

Entries are due by December 31, 2025.
